Smokvica: A Taste of Manhattan in Belgrade

smokvica belgrade

Some things are made for summer. Cool, pastel-coloured terraces, pitchers of lemonade and fruity cocktails and an atmosphere that suggests that the long days will never end.

Smokvica Belgrade offers all of these things.

Open only during summer (April to October), Smokvica is located in the terrace of an old building hidden away outside of the main city centre and features simply an outdoor seating area and small open kitchen (hence why it’s only open during the warmer months).

Having wandered down the wrong street several times, we finally found this place, a supposed “Manhattan-esque” cool hangout spot for locals, and we weren’t disappointed. Apparently it’s hard to get a seat here in the evenings when people descend on the bar for its wonderful pitchers of cocktails (and judging by the amount of seating I can totally understand why), but we had no problem finding a table at 3pm.

The tables and chairs are wooden garden furniture painted in pastels of purple and green, and the terrace is decorated in a cool, fresh, funky way, which could honestly make you believe you were somewhere other than Serbia (i.e. New York). We ordered a jug of the homemade lemonade with ginger and apple, which turned out to be a good money-saving option as we managed to get at least two and a half glasses each out of it, yet costed only twice the price of one glass on the menu. It was delicious and refreshing; just what you need on a hot day in the city.

We also ordered two of their burgers. The kitchen here serves only snack-type foods, so don’t come here expecting a big meal (or cutlery). The cheeseburger and hamburger are exactly the same (expect for the addition of cheese, of course), both coming with salad, mayonnaise and bacon. It wasn’t the best burger I’ve ever had, but the meat patty was thick and the bread bun was sweet. The fries were hot and crispy, my only criticism would have been I would have liked more of them!

I definitely want to visit this bar again before I leave Belgrade, if only to try their cocktails. The atmosphere is laid back and funky, and if their homemade lemonade is anything to go by, we won’t be let down.

If you follow in our foodsteps:

  • Smokvica is located at Kralja Petra 73 in the Old Town of Belgrade
  • The bar is open until 1am daily during summer, but expect to stand if you arrive after 8pm.
