Pickled Herring Sandwich, Amsterdam

herring sandwich amsterdam
Pickled herring is a popular snack in the Netherlands and you will often see small stalls selling them on many street corners.

Whilst in Amsterdam I tried a stall local to my apartment, and sampled pickled herring on a white bun topped with raw white onion and pickles. As I’m not a fan of raw onion, I think I would omit that next time, but the fish itself was fresh and thick and the flavour combinations were different to anything I’ve ever had before.

Did the herring sandwich have mustard or what sauce?

No, it just comes plain with chopped onions. Because it’s pickled, it already has a fairly strong flavour to it without any sauce.
