A confused woman's guide to Northern England and beyond

Straying From Local Cuisine

frites in amsterdam

Although I always like to eat local, sometimes certain towns or cities can have limited food choices or sometimes you just crave a taste of home.

This is often particularly true when you are travelling in countries where the cuisine is extremely different to your own or omits certain food groups that you usually enjoy. For me, these tend to be bread, cheese, chocolate and avocados. You know, all the healthy stuff.

Yet, surprisingly, sometimes you can find a delicious interpretation of another country’s cuisine in the most unlikely of places.

pak putra melaka

Great Indian Food in Malaysia

I have talked before about my love of Indian food and despite having eaten it regularly back at home, I have only managed to find good Indian-style food on one stop of our travels so far, and that was in Melaka, Malaysia at Pak Putra Restaurant.

The naan bread there was so mouthwateringly delicious that it has made me want to book a tour package to India just to get more Indian food (or just book a flight home and order a takeaway). It is one of the main international cuisines that I adore the most and even though I have yet to visit India myself, one of the best India travel tips I could give to anyone would be to eat as much as you can while you are there. Because, as I have found, good Indian (and Indian imitation) food is hard to come by in most other countries in the world.

botako pizza belgrade

Great Pizza in Serbia

This one was a bit of a shocker. Particularly because the main pizza topping in the rest of Eastern Europe was ham and mushroom, so to discover Botako restaurant and its range of amazing toppings and hand-woven crust was like present from God.

It constituted several of our meals in the city and definitely satisfied both my cheese and carbs craving, without all the stodgy meat that was featured everywhere else.

burger bar amsterdam

Great Burgers and Fries in Amsterdam

Having a big Belgian influence, Amsterdam is brimming with fantastic frites stands, all with a variety of unhealthy toppings. But the burgers were definitely a big surprise.

Thinking we wouldn’t get a decent burger until we were back in the States, we were very impressed with the offerings at Burger Bar in the city centre. Not only can you choose your own meat and topping combinations, but they also offer wheat buns and a speciality topping of the month, which the customers decide upon. It was also very big portions, which again came as something of a surprise.
