Improving and Maintaining Your Garden

There are some tricks and tips that can help to make your yard a fetching focal point of your property, but that won’t require you spend every waking hour working on keeping it beautiful. Use pragmatism and consult with professionals to identify what is practical for your space, climate, budget, and schedule before taking on elaborate, expansive landscape designs that run the risk of being a challenge to maintain over time.

Some tips to consider include the following:

Keeping Things Simple

Instead of seeking to “wow” others with an abundance of flowers, gardens, or elaborate landscaping, keep things simple. Focus on one or two elements, such as a small vegetable garden or herb window boxes, in addition to the basic chores such as keeping the lawn trimmed and the hedges pruned. Enlist help where you can, such as hiring the neighbor’s son to mow the grass, and dedicate your time on the features that make your yard unique and inventive, adding more features as your time and schedule allows.

Making Less Work

If your goal is to simply create a lovely green space without having to break your back every weekend keeping it looking this way, consider some feasible shortcuts that can minimize the labor involved. One thing to consider might include paving over grass, which has several perks. Paving can prevent the weed growth that requires you to manually weed and consistently trim your yard. This also may expand potential living space by giving you an attractive patio to place a picnic table, conversation set, or outdoor furniture for warm-weather entertaining or recreation.

Bringing in Focal Points

A focal point in your yard can take attention away from less alluring features, and can help to camouflage those aspects which are not yet as attractive as you wish them to be. For example, if your area is going through a dry spell and the result is burnt, brown lawns and ground cover, try to divert attention away from this issue with a clever focal point. This might be a completely inanimate object, like an attractive statue with a carefully positioned spotlight. This might also be a solar fountain, surrounded by an area of aggregate, such as gravel or crushed stone. Not only do these items distract from the less-than-beautiful grass currently in the space, but also will require little, if any, effort to maintain. This will also free up time so you can focus on your grass, garden, or other outdoor feature.

Maintaining Your Space

There are some tips and strategies that can make a difference in the amount of time and effort required in maintaining your home’s green space. For example, using an attractive and convenient ground cover to address problem areas of your yard or outdoor space is a great way to add beauty while not generating more work in the long run.

Make things easy on yourself when planning your home’s landscaping. This does not mean that you have to sacrifice beauty or give up features that you enjoy, but rather puts the focus on a few practical elements that are viable to maintain. Think of inventive ways to create drama or allure in your yard that won’t force you to spend every weekend and weeknight slaving away in the yard, and consider enlisting help from professional landscapers if it becomes too much of a chore.
