Taking Care of Your Hair While Traveling

round the world trip

Going on a trip? Whether on a family vacation, a business outing or a trip with the ladies, it’s imperative that you keep up with a healthy hair routine. The worst thing you can do is forget your regular washing and styling products and use those little vials of soap the hotel provides. This is especially true if you color your hair, as these sub-par shampoos can actually strip your color away at a faster rate. Whether you’re going away for a week or a month, it’s important to anticipate the conditions in which you’ll be staying, as well as the weather and environment.

Keep Humidity at Bay

If you have naturally curly hair and you’re heading to the tropics, you’re probably worried about your head looking like a frizz-ball. However, if you maintain your regular hair health routine, plus add in a few new ones, you should be able to tame that mane and get out to enjoy your vacation. The trick is to start in the shower with the perfect shampoo and conditioner for you – preferably a lightweight moisturizing formula that will give your hair the hydration it so desperately needs so it doesn’t have to get the desired moisture from the muggy air, advises Cosmopolitan. With your hair still damp, apply a lightweight serum or oil that acts to repel any humidity. Lock in hydration by sealing the cuticle, so use a soft bristled brush to blow dry your hair down towards the ends. Use the cool shot feature on your blow dryer if you have one to provide the necessary seal. Style your hair and then set it with an anti-frizz aerosol hairspray.

Combat Chlorine

Pools are notorious for containing unhealthy levels of chlorine, which can leave your hair with a green tinge and tangles to boot. Salt water at the beach can also tangle your hair, leaving it matted and unmanageable. For days by the pool or beach, wear a straw hat which can hide tangles if they’ve already happened, and prevent them from occurring in the first place if you want to control your locks. If you plan on taking a dip, spray on a leave-in conditioner with a spray bottle and spritz it on before getting into the pool, suggests Lonely Planet.

Hair Care Tips

According to Puig Hair Restoration Center, a company that provides hair transplants for Houston residents, to keep your hair from drying out and getting unruly on vacation, whip up a mixture of one egg, some oil and some water. Massage this concoction into your hair and wrap with a clear plastic shower wrap or bag. Let sit for a half hour before washing it out. If you don’t have access to a hair dryer in your hotel room, just apply some leave-in conditioner and go with a wet look that’s fast, easy and repels frizz. Invest in a microfiber cloth or turban to quickly dry wet hair. Don’t forget to pack travel-size dryers, straighteners and mini versions of your favorite shampoos and conditioners. Guys: the best part about you hair is that you can get a cut and style right before you go, and this can cut down on the fuss while away. Seek out a barber shop at your destination for a rejuvenating wash and style right before a meeting. Ladies: bring elastics and other quick fixes to manage your hair in a pinch.

Use these tips to manage your hair while on vacation and you’ll look and feel great.
