Love Valley, Goreme

love valley goreme

When you first arrive at Love Valley in Goreme, you quickly come to realise why it is called that.

The place is filled with phallic rock formations. Or sticks of asparagus. You choose, depending on how far into the gutter your mind is.

We were driven there by the kindly father of the owner of our guest house, who took us there shortly before sunset to capture some photos of the valley and its “unique” rock formations.

The valley was eerily quiet, us seemingly being the only people there at that time of day. We wandered through the distinctive landscape with mouths agape (not at the stone penises, people. Tut tut.) – partly because of how beautiful it appeared at that time of day and partly because it felt other-worldy. I did not feel as though I was in the middle of Turkey right then, but more on a set from Star Wars.

I have never before seen anything quite like Love Valley and doubt I will see much like it again on my travels. Maybe these photos can go some way to explaining why.

This is beautiful… although I totally want to lower the tone and talk about how phallic that last photo looks… x
