Decorating Your Ceiling

Decorating a ceiling

Decorating your ceiling is a great way to a give a normal room a professionally-designed appearance. Luckily, many ceiling decorations are easy to do on your own and within a budget. However, there are still plenty of high-end ceiling treatments for those of us who are willing to drop the big bucks on our interior design projects.

Paint and Wallpaper

It may seem simple, but just putting a coat or two of paint on your ceiling can really bring your room to life. If your walls are neutral, a pop of color on the ceiling can make rooms fun and interesting without being overwhelming. Thick painted stripes are particularly trendy patterns for ceilings. But if painting your entire ceiling seems like a little much, try just painting something in the center. This technique is great for rooms with hanging lamps. Painting circular designs around the hanging base of the lamp is simple, interesting, and beautiful without being overbearing. Wallpapering your ceiling is another fun, funky way to liven up the room. Because there are so many wallpapers to choose from, you can really control how your look turns out. Choosing something neutral in color but with an interesting texture or pattern creates a subtle elegance. If you’re a little wilder, you can go all-out and pick something fun and floral. Strippable wall paper is a great choice because it is fairly simple to remove, so as long as you have a few hours to spare you can change your look on a whim.

Decals

Remember that glow-in-the-dark star decal fad that swept the bedrooms of our nation’s children? Well, decals have grown up. There are a myriad of more mature decals available that make fantastic ceiling decorations. From striking black and white patterns to realistic birds and clouds, adding a graphic element to your home decor makes you stand out from the crowd. Try finding a decal that matches your walls to tie together your room’s color scheme. Putting decals on the blades of your ceiling fan is a whimsical, surprising upgrade to your ceiling. Or, if you still secretly crave the night sky above your bed, there are gorgeous, accurate decals of constellations to fuel your decorating nostalgia.

Ceiling Treatments

For those who are willing to reach a little further into their pockets to make their ceilings stand out, architectural treatments may be the way to go. Ceiling installations can make your home look either rustic or industrial, contemporary or cozy, but always unquestionably high end. Deciding to use a wood ceiling system creates a natural warmth in your home or business, and has the added benefit of improving the acoustics of your space. Wood ceiling systems are wonderful for bedrooms and living rooms, or really anywhere you want to feel homy and welcoming. Metal or aluminum ceiling treatments look sleek and modern, and their reflective properties enhance your room’s lighting. The clean, polished look of metal treatments is ideal for kitchens and bathrooms.

Hanging Decorations
If you’re ready to get three dimensional, hanging decorations are the right choice for you. Hanging a fabric canopy over your bed can give your bedroom a tropical feel. If you’re decorating a child’s room, try using fishing wire to hang butterflies or airplanes from the ceiling. You can sew artificial flowers into clusters and hang those, or make your own banners out of antique ticket stubs or origami shapes.

Whatever you choose to do, utilizing your ceiling in an artistic way will make your home unique, beautiful, and fun.
