Confused Julia

A confused woman's guide to Northern England and beyond

Apom Manis in Penang

Sometimes you just need a little “something something” after your main meal. Once the noodles and rice are over, your sweet tooth kicks in and you need a little sugar relief.

Which was why, when I spotted a street vendor in Penang cooking what appeared to be small pancakes on a hot griddle, I knew I had to get me some.

Upon further inspection I realised that what he was cooking were actually apom manis, something I had read about before we got to the island; sweet dessert-type crepes made from egg, sugar, coconut milk and flour. Apom manis are sometimes eaten plain for breakfast or can be cooked with sweet fillings such as sliced banana, dessicated coconut or slightly more savoury fillings like sweetcorn.

The speed with which the street-stall holder filled and flipped the pancakes was something to be admired. For the sweet (see what I did there?) price of only RM2, he popped four of the pancakes out of their little shells and folded them over, before stuffing them into a banana leaf pocket and handing to us to devour.

Hot banana dessert, straight off the hot plate….what more could you ask for?
