Dog Biscuits Recipe

homemade dog biscuits

I’ve always liked buying wholesome, fresh dog biscuits. That was, back when I had dogs.

For Christmas I would bake them fresh homemade dog biscuits, knowing that they had to be at least as good as the best ones in the store, because at least I knew every ingredient which was going in to them. Now that I’m in the USA for a little while and am currently acting as step mother to Scott’s dog, Holly, I wanted to bake her some tasty biscuits. I was sure that she had never had peanut butter before, and knowing that almost all dogs go crazy for peanut butter, I baked her my go-to recipe for dog biscuits, hoping that she would like them.

Let’s just say that the tasting panel were more than impressed.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups / 250g of plain flour

  • 1 cup / 85g of rolled oats

  • 1/3 cup / 110g peanut butter (either smooth or crunchy – I used smooth)

  • 1 1/4 cups / 425g hot water

Directions

  • Pre-heat the oven to 180C / 350F. Mix both of the dry ingredients together in a bowl and then add the peanut butter, followed by the hot water.
  • Mix the ingredients into a dough and then knead into a ball. Flour your work surface and roll the dough out to around 1/4inch thick, then use a cookie cutter to cut out shapes and place them on a greased or non-stick baking tray. I don’t have my bone-shaped cookie cutter anymore, but I used the circular glass top of a cheese shaker and cut them into rounds instead. For a bigger dog, the larger-sized treats are fine, but for smaller breeds you may want to use something smaller to cut out the shapes.
  • Cook the biscuits for around 40 minutes or until golden brown. If your dog likes hard, crunchy treats you can leave the biscuits in the cold oven overnight to harden them, otherwise just cool them as you would any other biscuit on a rack.
