Relax and Unwind in Kerala

kerala backwaters

When thinking of organising a relaxing getaway, India might not be the most obvious option – but certain parts of the country just couldn’t be more perfect for unwinding in. In my opinion, colourful Kerala fits the bill exactly, with its beautiful scenery, lovely (and quiet) beaches and wonderful spa traditions.

So, today I’m going to tell you about some of the very best ways to relax in this part of the country. And if you like the sound of a dash of luxury to help make your trip all the more indulgent, it’s well worth finding out what specialist tour operators have to offer.

The backwater region

One of the most scenic and tranquil parts of Kerala is its famous backwater region. This section of the state has a rich cultural heritage, with very traditional ways of life playing out on its shores; in fact, one of the joys of exploring here is observing these.

The best way to discover the region is also the most relaxing – travelling in a converted kettuvallam, which is a traditional rice barge. Typically, these have been transformed from basic transport vessels into ultra-luxurious houseboats, with most featuring lavish details like silk-lined seats on the observation deck and air-conditioned bedrooms. The latter is particularly bound to appeal in the Indian heat!

The scenery here is beautiful, while you can see a host of local wonders as you cruise, including floating duck farms.

Beaches

Beaches and relaxation go hand in hand, so it’s a good thing that Kerala is home to so many of them. You’ll find some of the best in south Kerala, including Alappuzha beach, which is very popular and has a charming old pier that dates back around 140 years. If you do come here, though, bear in mind that the water isn’t suitable for swimming.

The lovely quiet beach of Kappil, just 6 km away from the tourist attraction of Bekal Fort, is another must-visit; make sure you walk up to Kodi cliff to get great views across the shore. Bekal beach itself (next to the fort) is more vibrant and often features weekend entertainment, too.

Seaside towns

Kovalam is a lovely beach town – and one that has absolutely stunning scenery. What’s particularly nice about it is that there are plenty of places where you can escape the crowds and relax, such as palm groves and rice paddies where you’ll have the opportunity to get a taste of traditional Kerala.

Kovalam beach, meanwhile, is quite famous. Actually made up of three crescent beaches, this spot on the Kovalam coast is sheltered by rocks, backed by coconut groves and home to some wonderful seafood restaurants.

Spas

Nothing says relaxation more than a spa, and Kerala is renowned for its Ayurvedic spas and treatments. In case you’re unfamiliar with Ayurveda, it’s a traditional type of medicine and the principles that govern it were long ago applied to spa treatments, creating a form of relaxation and therapy that aims to soothe the body and soul.

It’s also not difficult to arrange an Ayurvedic treatment, given that most hotels in the state offer some. Plus, there are many government-approved centres dedicated to Ayurveda, such as Kerala Ayurveda in Fort Cochin.
