Pembrokeshire is the most westerly county in Wales and one of the most beautiful. It includes within its borders the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park and the beaches are renowned both in terms of beauty and cleanliness. The county borders the sea on three sides, so it’s no surprise that the coast plays a large role in the region’s culture and history.

Pembrokeshire has many pretty villages. Charming stone cottages continue to stand the test of time and many have now been converted into cafes, guest houses and holiday lets. Many were built in the 18th and 19th centuries as more housing was required.

Simple one-storey cottages constructed during this time were frequently built by the owners and their friends and family, using locally sourced materials including stone and thatch. Traditional skills such as clay and cob walling were widely utilised. Later in the 19th century, two-storey cottages became more common, built for the tenant farmers of wealthy landowners.

Picturesque villages and cottages can be seen throughout Wales, from the wilder Snowdonia region to the ancient forests of the Brecon Beacons and the beautiful coastline stretching up to north Wales. VisitBritain has more information on the region’s stunning natural habitats and manmade attractions.
