Restoring Wood in Your Home

Mid-century house with wooden flooring

Wood can be a remarkably versatile and attractive material in the home. Whether you have wood in your floors, walls, deck or patio, you can be sure that it will complement the rest of your interior and exterior. Additionally, wood furniture is typically gorgeous and is relatively easy to maintain. If you have wood in your home that needs to be restored, you will likely want to explore the best ways to clean and refurbish this material. A method that works well for furniture may not be the best strategy to implement on a wooden deck, so knowing which techniques to use on various items may spare you effort and time that could be better spent elsewhere.

Restoring the Finish on Wood Furniture

If you have a wooden table or other furniture that has sustained many scratches, you do not need to resort to using it as firewood. You may apply a solution to the surface that can make your scratched furniture look as pretty as the day you brought it home. A product known as scratch cover, which is a pigmented variety of polish for furniture, can be quite useful when you’re working on a furniture restoration project. Simply rub the solution into the surface of the furniture (and be sure you wear gloves when you do this). You might be amazed at how well this kind of product works, even on a surface that is covered in scratches.

Refurbishing Unfinished Wood Furniture

Dealing with unfinished wood is much different from repairing the finished variety. Unfinished wood is quite porous, and you cannot apply the same kinds of products to unfinished wood furniture that you could if the piece was made of finished wood. According to Bayou City Lumber, a company that specializes in treated pilings, the first thing you will need to do is clean unfinished wood furniture with a soft cloth, such as a microfiber cloth. Next, you can rub the surface gently with sandpaper until it feels smooth. You may then use a sealer to protect the wood and keep it cleaner longer. You might use either a commercial sealer or oil—even vegetable oil can work.

Restoring Hardwood Floors

In many cases, scuffed hardwood floors simply require rebuffing. In other cases, you will need to follow several steps to get your hardwood floor looking lustrous. The first step is to clean the floor with water and mild soap. Next, you can use a sanding machine to strip the layers of wax that may have accumulated on your floor’s surface. At this point, you can use filler or tiny pieces of hardwood to fill gaps in the surface. Finally, you’ll need to apply a stain or finish to the floor to achieve the look you desire.

Cleaning Exterior Wood

Wood on the exterior of your home can give your property a natural and elegant appearance. If you want to keep it looking as attractive as possible, you will need to clean it periodically. The best way to clean wooden walls, siding, decks, and patios is to use a pressure washer. You can attach this type of device to your garden hose, and it will keep your exterior wood surfaces looking pretty and new.

Countless people prefer wood furniture, floors, decks, and walls in their homes. Wood is a natural material that can withstand much use. Keeping the wood in your home in good condition will ensure that it lasts for many years.
