Sir Hummus, Amsterdam

Sir Hummus Amsterdam

Sir Hummus started life as a delivery service for the hummus-loving people of Amsterdam – a way of getting fresh hummus delivered straight to your door. Despite both Scott and I being hummus obsessives enthusiasts, we never partook of this service. Some may say that we were too lazy to even get something delivered – I like to think that we were instead choosing to give back to our local neighbourhood by buying fresh hummus from our local Turkish greengrocer instead.

But imagine our delight when we heard the news that Sir Hummus had opened their own shop-cum-cafe in nearby De Pijp. This meant that not only could we try their hummus as a whole meal in a cute cafe setting, but also that we’d get a bit of exercise cycling over there. We were sold.

As it’s still fairly early days for the brand, the shop is pretty unassuming to the point that we almost missed where it was located when we turned up. It’s very basic inside – think a few wooden tables and open shelves full of jars of olive oil and tahini – but when you’re only specialising in one particular dish, you really don’t need anything more.

Having had a fairly big breakfast that day (our jaunt for hummus had been a last minute decision otherwise, trust me, I would have left ample room), we decided to share the regular hummus plate, which comes with two pitas (either white or wheat) and a little beetroot and almond salad.

The hummus was drizzled with oil, sprinkled with paprika and topped with wonderfully soft and nutty whole chickpeas (Scott wasn’t a big fan of this but I loved it. Dare I say that the texture reminded me of mushy peas? Maybe that’s why I liked it…) It was rich and decadent and wonderfully garlicky, which is exactly how I like my hummus. Too often I find the taste of either lemon or tahini overwhelming and it ruins it for me. But Sir Hummus, just like our beloved local greengrocer, had got it just right.

We were advised to splash on some of the “special sauce” that sat on the table, which, judging by the green colour, I can only assume had some form of avocado in it. It was definitely a little spicy and complemented the creaminess of the hummus perfectly.

I’m now pretty sad that we didn’t try Sir Hummus earlier, but having said that, I enjoyed eating the hummus as a whole meal, complete with pitas and sauces, as opposed to it just showing up at my front door in a little tub. I’ll definitely be back – probably more times than I’ll care to admit. And next time I’ll be getting a big ol’ bowl of hummus all to myself.
