As someone who loves to enjoy local desserts and cake wherever I travel, it was important to me to try and hunt down the best princesstarta in Stockholm during my recent visit. I have previously made and photographed a princesstarta myself as part of my day job, but it was important for me to try an original version in its home country. That was when my research led me to Vete-Katten.
Vete-Katten is a well-known traditional Swedish bakery and café located in Stockholm. It has been open since 1928 and has gained a reputation for serving high-quality pastries and desserts, including the popular Prinsesstårta (Princess Cake). I have to say, after enjoying a fika of coffee and a slice of this delicious cake one warm September afternoon, I have to say that I can see why.
The marzipan was the perfect thickness and not too sweet, the sponge was light and airy and surprisingly didn’t get lost under that thick layer of cream and the jam layer at the bottom contained chunks of fresh raspberries. The overall flavour wasn’t as sweet as I had been expecting and although I tend to swerve cream-filled cake and pastries as a rule, I could definitely have taken down a second slice of this with my unlimited coffee refills (Swedish caffeine culture for the win!)
The price per slice was about £5 ($6.30) at time of writing, which definitely isn’t crazy for a well-known bakery in the centre of a capital city and I felt the portion size for such a price was just right. Let me know if you go and try it!
