Confused Julia

A confused woman's guide to Northern England and beyond

Not A Biscuit In Sight

On a big, big street in a big, big town lies a small little slice of dessert heaven.

This heaven, my sweet tooth Mecca in Belgrade, is called Mamma’s Biscuit House. Which is ironic, really, as it doesn’t sell a single biscuit.

It was a warm night in Belgrade when I first discovered this place. We were wandering the streets of the city after dinner, feeling a little less than satisfied and craving something sweet, when we remembered having seen this place in passing. One look inside the glass cabinets inside the cafe told me everything I needed to know. This was definitely the place to indulge my sweet craving.

I ordered a slice of the chocolate torte, which came heated with ice cream and topped with berries and berry sauce. Although ridiculously delicious and gooey (and just the kind of thing I was looking for), I was surprised that it came heated and with all of those accompaniments, considering they weren’t listed on the menu and nor was I asked if I wanted them. I guess that could be a problem for anyone with dairy allergies or an aversion to berries, but for me, I was in seventh heaven, having not had a good slice of hot chocolate fudge cake in months.

Scott ordered two of the small “sweets” that the shop is supposedly well-known for: one in the character of a Smurf and one a little pig. These “sweets” are actually filled with a kind of homemade marzipan/almond/walnut paste, which is delicious and not what I was expecting at all. Each character also features different coatings, the Smurf featuring a hint of white chocolate in the hat.

Mamma’s Biscuit House also serves a small selection of gluten-free desserts, a large array of small chocolates and marzipan sweets and several signature cakes. If you happen to be having a wedding or birthday in Belgrade, they also custom-make cakes for any occasion. Unfortunately, I didn’t have any such excuse to order a whole cake to myself and so had to satisfy myself with my chocolate cake.

The cafe also has a covered outdoor seating area and bar adjacent to the shop, facing the main street and serves some delicious-looking coffee and chocolate drinks concoctions, which I have yet to try.

If you find yourself in Belgrade and are in dire need of something sweet, I’d suggest you check these guys out. I highly doubt you’ll regret it.

If you follow in our foodsteps:

  • Mamma’s Biscuit House is located at Njegoševa 9 (Kralja Milana), Belgrade, Serbia 11000, close to the non-stop Maxi supermarket
  • The cafe has a covered outdoor seating area adjacent to it, with its own separate bar, although this is only open in summer.
