Family Activities in Miami

Miami Children's Museum

If you want to take a family vacation but are struggling with finding a kid-friendly location, look no further than Miami. With beaches aplenty and free family activities galore, Miami is a vacation destination that everyone will love, regardless of age. With fun hotels, unforgettable activities, and delicious dining options, Miami may just turn into your favorite family getaway place. Read on for tips, suggestions, and things to do to make your vacation the best ever.

Starting Out: Plan Properly

Where to stay: Figuring out where to stay in Miami can be tough—Miami is large and has many hotels, motels, and even bed and breakfast options. The best thing to do is decide on an area first. The downtown Miami area is fun and has a great nightlife scene, but it can be expensive. Miami Beach is also expensive, but waterfront hotels make for an awesome vacation. Other areas include Sunny Isles Beach, Miami Lakes, Coconut Grove, Bal Harbor, and more. If you’re not quite sure where you want to stay, referencing an official source about the area is helpful.

Before you leave: Before you pack up the car or hop on your flight to Miami, make sure you have taken the time to plan things properly. Not only is scheduling activities in advance advised for smooth sailing while on your vacation, you should also check in with your hotel about any amenities offered. For example, if anyone in your family has any special needs or requests, talk to the hotel about these needs prior to arrival. Inquiring about air conditioning, a refrigerator within the room, whether or not breakfast is included, what services are offered by the hotel, etc., will guarantee a getaway that is free from additional stressors.

What to Do: Activities and Beaches

Once you arrive in Miami, there is a plethora of family-friendly activities that await you. For some free indoor fun, visit the Miami Children’s Museum or the Miami Science Museum. Other free activities include Biscayne National Park, the Gold Coast Railway Museum, and the outdoor festival known as Big Night in Little Haiti. Of course, you can also visit the beach for an inexpensive outing. Miami has many beaches, each one unique and beautiful in its own way. If museums aren’t your family’s thing, you can take a tour, go for an excursion, or participate in water sports. Jet skiing and boogie boarding are two much-loved activities in Miami’s waters. Kids will also love the Miami Zoo or the Monkey Jungle, a thirty-acre reserve where primates of all kinds can run around without barriers.

What to Eat: Family-Friendly Dining

Miami is home to many restaurants that even the pickiest eaters in your family will love. With everything from pizza to sushi, you’re guaranteed to enjoy Miami dining. Top kid-friendly restaurants include Big Pink, an inexpensive restaurant famous for its burgers and pizza; Bubba Gump Shrimp Co., which serves shrimp served just about any way imaginable; and the Lime Fresh Mexican Grill, which serves kids meals for under $5, and gives you the option of purchasing adult food items—such as burritos and quesadillas—in kid-sized portions.
